A porta cabin, also written portacabin or called a portable cabin, is a room built in a yard and delivered complete. It has a steel frame, insulated wall and roof panels, a floor, doors, windows, lighting and sockets. AC can be added. On site it is set on level ground, connected to power, and used the same day.
In Qatar most porta cabins are on construction and industrial sites: offices for the site team, rooms for workers, a cabin for the guard at the gate, toilets and showers, a canteen, a prayer room, a clinic. They are also used as shop and sales offices, yard offices and ticket booths.
A porta cabin is not the same as a shipping container. A container is a steel box made to carry and store goods. It is strong and secure but hot, with no windows or insulation. A porta cabin is made for people to work or live in. Many sites use both: cabins for people and containers for tools and materials.
You can rent a porta cabin or buy one. Renting suits a project with an end date. Buying suits a cabin you will keep for years, and a used, refurbished cabin lowers the price further.
